Hybrid and Electric Vehicles (EVs) have become increasingly popular, and for good reason. They can offer excellent fuel efficiency, lower emissions, and a different driving experience than traditional gas-powered vehicles.

But is a hybrid or EV right for you? And once you have one, what does maintenance look like?

The answer depends on your driving habits, budget, and how you use your vehicle. Let’s take a closer look.

Hybrid vs. EV: What’s the Difference?

While both hybrids and EVs use electric power, they aren’t the same.

Hybrid vehicles use both a gasoline engine and an electric motor. Depending on the type of hybrid, the vehicle may use the electric motor, gasoline engine, or both to help power the vehicle. Because hybrids still have a gasoline engine, they still require many of the same types of maintenance as traditional vehicles.

Electric Vehicles (EVs) are powered entirely by electricity and don’t have a traditional gasoline engine. Instead, they use one or more electric motors powered by a high-voltage battery.

This means EVs don’t require things like traditional oil changes, spark plugs, or many of the other services associated with gasoline engines. However, that doesn’t mean EVs are maintenance-free.

So, Is a Hybrid or EV Right for You?

Before making the switch, think about how you typically use your vehicle.

    Consider a Hybrid if:

    • You want better fuel economy but aren’t ready to go fully electric.
    • You frequently take longer trips and want the convenience of a gasoline engine.
    • You do a lot of stop-and-go driving.
    • You want to reduce how often you visit the gas pump without changing how you fuel your vehicle.

    Consider an EV if:

    • Most of your driving is local or predictable.
    • You have convenient access to charging at home, work, or along your regular routes.
    • You want to eliminate gasoline from your daily driving.
    • You’re comfortable planning around charging needs for longer trips.

There isn’t one right choice for everyone. The best vehicle is the one that fits your lifestyle and driving habits.
